Unlocking Efficient Data Management

As we move closer to the general availability of Veeam Backup & Replication version 10, I am excited to share some of the cool new enhancements that will be part of this release. One of the most significant features in Update 4 for Backup & Replication 9.5 was Cloud Tier, which allowed customers to store their backed-up data in object storage on platforms such as AWS, Azure, and others. This feature has been well received, and our VCSPs (Veeam Cloud and Service Providers) have been looking for a way to retrieve the offloaded data from the Capacity Tier back to the Performance Tier on a per-tenant basis.

In response to this request, Veeam has introduced a new feature in v10 that allows VCSPs to download data from the Capacity Tier back to the Performance Tier. This feature is particularly useful for tenant offboarding or migration of backup data back on-premises. The ability to download data on a per-tenant basis provides our VCSPs with greater flexibility and control over their data management processes.

To initiate a download job, VCSPs can simply click on the Download icon in the Tenant ribbon or right-click on the tenant account and select Download. Before proceeding, an information box will appear informing the user that there is a backup chain on the performance extent and the disk space required to download the other backup data back to the performance tier from the capacity tier.

Once the download job is initiated, the SOBR (Scalable Object Backup Repository) Download job progress can be tracked. After completion, VCSPs can view details of the download from Object Storage to the Performance Tier. In the example shown below, a significant portion of the blocks that were present in the Performance Tier have been rehydrated to their original size using the intelligent Block Recovery feature.

The new feature leverages Intelligent Block Recovery to save on egress and reduce download time. As a result, VCSPs can enjoy faster and more efficient data retrieval from the Capacity Tier back to the Performance Tier. Once the download is complete, all tenant’s data is back on the performance tier ready to be accessed.

This feature provides significant benefits for our VCSPs, allowing them to easily retrieve and rehydrate their backup data as needed. With the ability to download data on a per-tenant basis, VCSPs can now better manage their data and provide more flexible and scalable solutions to their customers.

Stay tuned for more updates on Veeam Backup & Replication version 10 as we approach its general availability. As always, please note that the information and screen shots in this post are based on beta code and may be subject to change by the time of final GA.
