VMworld Barcelona has announced a new service targeting Managed Service Providers (MSPs), VMware Cloud Director Service (CDS). This hosted SaaS version of vCloud Director offers multi-tenancy on VMware Cloud on AWS, allowing MSPs to efficiently consume resources and expand as needed. The VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC becomes the provider, offering a more efficient and cost-effective solution for MSPs.
The new service is an exciting development for MSPs, as it offers a more streamlined and managed experience for their customers. With vCloud Director Service (CDS), MSPs can provide multi-tenancy on VMware Cloud on AWS, allowing them to offer a more efficient and cost-effective solution for their customers.
vCloud Director has evolved significantly since its inception, delivering on almost all of the features I was looking for at the time. This new service seems to be the last piece of the puzzle, offering MSPs a fully managed and abstracted resource that can be spun up in any VMC-enabled AWS region.
The ability for existing VCPPs (VMware Cloud Provider Partners) to land and expand into any VMC-enabled AWS region with this new service is significant. However, it remains to be seen how this will fit into existing VCPP service offerings. Will MSPs be able to use their existing provisioning and automation tools with the new service? Will the SaaS-based version of Cloud Director be first to market with new features, followed by the VCPP versions?
The fact that Cloud Director will span multiple clouds and platforms is an exciting development. The premise is that Cloud Director will extend beyond traditional vSphere IaaS-based platforms, offering MSPs a more comprehensive solution for their customers. It will be interesting to see when the name change takes place for the main product line offered to VMware Cloud Providers.
In conclusion, the announcement of VMware Cloud Director Service (CDS) is a significant development for Managed Service Providers. With its ability to offer multi-tenancy on VMware Cloud on AWS, CDS provides MSPs with a more efficient and cost-effective solution for their customers. The evolution of vCloud Director has been tremendous, delivering almost all of the features I was looking for at the time. This new service seems to be the last piece of the puzzle, offering MSPs a fully managed and abstracted resource that can be spun up in any VMC-enabled AWS region. It remains to be seen how this will fit into existing VCPP service offerings and what the future holds for the name change of the main product line offered to VMware Cloud Providers.
