Improving Your Whiteboard Skills for Better Communication

As technology professionals, we frequently engage in meetings and presentations that require us to use whiteboards to communicate ideas and concepts. However, many of us take this simple tool for granted and do not invest time in improving our skills in using it effectively. In this blog post, I will share my personal experience of how I improved my whiteboard skills and how you can do the same.

My Experience with Whiteboard Skills

As a VMware VCDX candidate, I realized that my whiteboard skills were not up to par, particularly when it came to writing in capital block letters and drawing diagrams. I knew that improving these skills would help me communicate more effectively during my defense. After some research, I discovered several tips and techniques that helped me enhance my whiteboard skills.

Different Tips for Different Purposes

Did you know that there are different types of tips available for whiteboard markers? The chisel-tip is ideal for writing, while the bullet/round-tip is better suited for drawing. The chisel-tip produces slender vertical lines and bold horizontal lines, making your writing more readable from a distance. On the other hand, the bullet/round-tip allows you to create lines of consistent width, making it perfect for drawing diagrams and shapes.

Improving Your Whiteboard Skills

To improve your whiteboard skills, start by learning how to write in capital block letters. This may seem simple, but it’s essential to make your writing easily readable from a distance. Additionally, practice using different sizes of handwriting depending on the information you want to convey. As a general rule of thumb, write letters about 3 cm high, which is as high as the index and middle-finger put together.

Another important aspect of whiteboarding is not talking to the whiteboard. Instead, touch the point you want to highlight or talk about, turn to the audience, and then start explaining. This technique helps you engage your audience and make your presentation more interactive.

Flashcards for Improved Writing

To further improve my whiteboard skills, I started using flashcards to practice writing in capital block letters and memorize important information. With the right pens, you can practice your handwriting and at the same time learn new concepts.

Improving Your Whiteboard Skills with Confidence

As a VMware VCDX candidate, improving my whiteboard skills helped me feel more confident during my defense. By investing time in learning how to use the whiteboard effectively, I was able to communicate my ideas and diagrams more clearly and accurately.

In conclusion, improving your whiteboard skills is a valuable investment in your communication abilities as a technology professional. With practice and dedication, you can enhance your handwriting, drawing, and presentation skills, leading to more effective communication and better outcomes for your projects and presentations. Remember to learn how to write in capital block letters, practice with different sizes of handwriting, and use flashcards to improve your writing skills. With these tips and techniques, you can take your whiteboard skills to the next level and become a more confident communicator.
