Varada Sethu Joins the TARDIS Crew

Doctor Who has just announced that Varada Sethu will be joining the show as a new companion in season two, alongside current companion Ruby Sunday. This news comes after earlier reports suggested that Millie Gibson’s character Ruby would be leaving the show after Ncuti Gatwa’s first season, which premieres on Disney+ on May 10th. However, it seems that Gibson will be sticking around for at least one more season, as the press release announcing Sethu’s casting mentions that she will be accompanying the Doctor alongside Ruby in season two.

Sethu is no stranger to sci-fi fans, having starred in the Disney+ series Andor as Cinta Kaz. She expressed her excitement about joining the Doctor Who family in a statement, saying “I feel like the luckiest person in the world. It is such an honor to be a part of the Whoniverse, and I’m so grateful to the whole Doctor Who family—because that is what they are—for welcoming me with open arms and making me feel so at home. I couldn’t ask for a better team than Ncuti and Millie to be on this adventure with. This is SO much fun!”

Doctor Who showrunner, executive producer, and writer Russell T Davies, who worked with Sethu on a BBC production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, welcomed her to the team, saying “It’s a joy to welcome her on board the TARDIS. Right now in the studio, shooting for 2025, we’ve got Ncuti, Millie and Varada fighting side by side—we need all three, because the stakes are higher than ever!”

Ncuti Gatwa made his debut as the Fifteenth Doctor in the Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road,” and his first season will consist of two episodes premiering on Disney+ on May 10th. The second season is currently in production and is set to release in 2025.

With the addition of Sethu to the cast, fans can expect even more excitement and adventure in store for the Doctor and his companions. The future of Doctor Who looks bright with this talented new cast member on board, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the TARDIS crew next.
