Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition: Setting Up Backup Infrastructure for Storage Snapshots
In my previous article, I discussed the installation of Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition, a free backup software for Windows Server. This time, I will delve into the process of setting up backup infrastructure for storage snapshots using Veeam. As we all know, having a reliable backup system is crucial to ensure data protection and business continuity.
Adding Storage for Veeam Backup
To set up backup infrastructure for storage snapshots with Veeam, we need to add storage to our Windows Server machine that runs Veeam. As mentioned earlier, Windows Server automatically configures the default backup repository when installing Veeam. However, we can also manually configure the backup repository by going to the Storage Infrastructure menu.
To add storage for Veeam backup, follow these steps:
1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication console and select the “Storage Infrastructure” option from the left-hand menu.
2. Click on “Add Storage” and select the storage device you want to use for backups. You can choose from a variety of storage options, including local disks, network shares, or cloud storage.
3. Once you have selected the storage device, Veeam will automatically detect and configure it as a backup repository.
Configuring Backup Infrastructure for Storage Snapshots
To set up backup infrastructure for storage snapshots using Veeam, we need to create a backup policy that includes the storage snapshot as a source. Here’s how to do it:
1. Go to the “Backup Infrastructure” option from the left-hand menu and select “Backup Sets”.
2. Click on “Create Backup Set” and give it a name, such as “Storage Snapshots”.
3. Select the storage snapshot as the backup source by clicking on the “Add Backup Source” button and selecting the appropriate storage device.
4. Choose the “Backup Incremental Forever” option to ensure that all backups are preserved indefinitely.
5. Set up the backup schedule and retention period as desired.
