VMware NSX for vSphere 6.4: Enhanced User Interface and Serviceability.
VMware has recently released NSX-v 6.4, with several new features and enhancements that significantly impact the platform’s functionality. One of the main focuses of this release was enhancing NSX’s ease of use and serviceability, which is evident in the numerous additions to the UI, including additional dashboards and menu items.
One of the most notable features of NSX-v 6.4 is the introduction of an HTML5 Web Client, which provides a more modern and intuitive user experience compared to the traditional Flash-based Web Client. The new HTML5 client offers several advantages over the previous version, including faster performance, improved usability, and better support for mobile devices.
Moreover, the NSX product team has taken an innovative approach by allowing each new feature in the HTML5 Web Client to be accessible from the old Flash-based Web Client as well. This means that users can continue to use the familiar Flash client while also having access to the latest features and enhancements.
One of the key enhancements to the UI is the improvement in the navigation menu, where some commonly used menu items that were previously several clicks away have been brought into the main tree. This makes it easier for users to access critical functions and settings without having to navigate through multiple levels of menus. As shown in the picture below, there is a lot more happening in the 6.4 menu tree on the right compared to previous releases on the left.
Another significant addition to NSX-v 6.4 is the System Scale Dashboard, which provides visibility into the current usage of various NSX components and system capacity relative to configuration maximums with warning thresholds configurable. This feature helps administrators monitor and manage their NSX environment more effectively, ensuring that resources are utilized efficiently and potential issues are identified before they become critical.
The HTML5 Web Client also introduces an EAM status monitor in the Host Preparation Tab and a direct way from the Web Client to generate Support Bundles. This streamlines the process of creating support bundles and provides easier access to essential information for troubleshooting and support purposes.
One of the most exciting features in NSX-v 6.4 is the Upgrade Coordinator, which simplifies and streamlines the upgrade process for NSX components. With this feature, users can select to perform a One Click Upgrade, where everything is upgraded during one upgrade session or customize which components are upgraded and organize component objects into upgrade groups.
The Upgrade Coordinator offers several benefits for service providers with many customers using vCloud Director Edge services. By having control over the NSX Edge upgrades, administrators can ensure that their customers’ services are minimally disrupted during the upgrade process. Moreover, the ability to group and order the upgrade process for Edges (and Service VMs) is an excellent enhancement that allows administrators to manage the upgrade process more efficiently.
Once the wizard has been completed, users are shown a progress dashboard, which can be clicked into to view the current state of upgrading components. Once all components have been upgraded, users can proceed with post-upgrade tasks and ensure their NSX environment is functioning correctly.
In conclusion, VMware NSX for vSphere 6.4 offers several significant enhancements to the UI and serviceability, making it easier for administrators to manage and maintain their NSX environments. With the introduction of an HTML5 Web Client, improved navigation menu, System Scale Dashboard, EAM status monitor, and Upgrade Coordinator, this release represents a major step forward for the platform’s functionality and usability.
