Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu: A Creepy and Weird Horror Story for Christmas
When it comes to filmmakers who are known for their unique and captivating stories, few are as fascinating as Robert Eggers. After The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, fans were eagerly awaiting his next project, and when Focus Features announced that Eggers’ new feature, Nosferatu, was coming out on Christmas day, it seemed like something very special. And after seeing the first footage from the film, it most certainly is.
At CinemaCon 2024, Focus Features screened the first trailer for the horror film and emphasized that “This definitely ain’t your father’s Nosferatu.” The trailer starts with a girl who is bathed in shadow, with an omniscient voice saying “Come to me.” She’s walking around slowly when we hear the words “Hear my call,” and a disembodied hand grabs her around the neck and she screams. The trailer then takes us on a journey through a person riding a horse across a field, a man running down a crowded street, and a woman asking “Does evil come from within us? Or beyond?”
As the trailer progresses, we see a camera flying across a landscape toward a massive castle. “He is coming,” someone says, as we see a person standing in front of a bunch of candles. We see a naked man, rats running across the street, and more things burning. The tagline “Succumb to the darkness” on Christmas implies that the film will be a creepy and weird horror story that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats.
The cast of Nosferatu includes Bill Skarsgård as Nosferatu, along with Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe. The film is a reimagining of the classic tale of the same name, which tells the story of a vampire who moves from Transylvania to Germany and preys on a young woman. Eggers’ version promises to be a fresh take on the classic story, with a more mainstream feel compared to his prior films.
Overall, the trailer looked very much like a Robert Eggers movie, albeit with more of a broad, mainstream feel compared to his prior films. The film promises to be a creepy and weird horror story that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats this Christmas. So, if you’re looking for a unique and special film to watch this holiday season, Nosferatu is definitely one to keep an eye out for.
