As a seasoned IT professional with a background in hosting and virtualization, I have had the privilege of working with both Microsoft and VMware technologies. My journey with virtualization began back in 2008, when I was hosting a startup’s servers on a co-lo server. At that time, my only exposure to virtualization was through Microsoft Virtual Server, which was not yet a mature product.
However, as I started working more closely with VMware and their vSphere platform, I quickly realized the power and flexibility of virtualization. Being able to run multiple operating systems on a single physical server, while maintaining isolation and security, was a game-changer for me. Over time, I transitioned my hosting infrastructure entirely to VMware, and have never looked back.
Today, as an Anittel partner and vExpert award winner, I am proud to be part of a community that values partnership, innovation, and customer success. Unlike Microsoft, which has historically taken a more controlling approach to their technology ecosystem, VMware empowers their partners to build upon the vSphere platform and deliver cutting-edge solutions. This partner-first mentality is what sets VMware apart and allows them to maintain a laser-focus on virtualization, without the distractions of public cloud offerings or proprietary software sales.
One of the most significant differences between Microsoft and VMware, in my opinion, is their approach to VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure). While Microsoft’s licensing restrictions for VDI are quite limiting, VMware’s vSphere platform offers a much more flexible and cost-effective solution. Moreover, with the recent acquisition of Airwatch, VMware has further solidified their position as a leader in the endpoint management space.
As someone who has come full circle in my virtualization journey, I can confidently say that I have never been more excited about the future of this technology. With innovations like Project Octopus and AppBlast, VMware continues to push the boundaries of what is possible with virtualization. In conclusion, being part of the vExpert community and having the opportunity to contribute to the ecosystem is a true honor. I look forward to continuing to evangelize and leverage the power of virtualization to deliver cutting-edge hosting solutions for my customers.
