Kubernetes Take Center Stage at VMware CodeHouse 2019

48 hours of Innovation and Collaboration at VMware CodeHouse 2019

From August 8th to 10th, VMware hosted its annual CodeHouse event, bringing together a talented group of women studying computer science and engineering to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in the tech industry. As in previous years, open source technology played a central role in the 48-hour hackathon, with teams competing to build applications running on Kubernetes that advance either STEM education or diversity and inclusion in the tech industry.

This year’s CodeHouse event was themed around “Empowering Women in Tech,” and the hackathon challenges reflected this focus. Teams were tasked with creating innovative solutions that address issues such as improving access to STEM education, promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and empowering women in tech leadership roles.

The event kicked off with a keynote address from VMware’s own Sarah Javanmardi, who shared her experiences as a woman in tech and emphasized the importance of mentorship, support, and inclusivity in driving success in the industry. Throughout the weekend, attendees were treated to a series of workshops, panel discussions, and technical sessions led by industry experts and thought leaders.

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity for attendees to connect with each other and with industry professionals. The hackathon format allowed participants to collaborate and learn from one another, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose that is often lacking in traditional conference settings. As one attendee noted, “I loved being able to work alongside other women who are passionate about tech and making a difference. It was inspiring to see what we could accomplish together in just 48 hours!”

Another highlight of the event was the showcase of innovative projects that were developed over the course of the weekend. Teams presented their final projects to a panel of judges, who evaluated their solutions based on criteria such as technical merit, impact, and creativity. The winning team, which developed an app for STEM education, impressed judges with their innovative use of Kubernetes to create a scalable and flexible platform for delivering educational content.

As in previous years, the event was a resounding success, with attendees reporting increased confidence and motivation to pursue careers in tech, as well as a deeper understanding of the role that open source technology can play in driving innovation and inclusivity in the industry. As one attendee noted, “CodeHouse was an incredible experience that opened my eyes to the power of open source technology and the impact it can have on STEM education and diversity in tech. I left feeling inspired and empowered to make a difference.”

As the tech industry continues to evolve, events like CodeHouse 2019 are more important than ever. By bringing together talented individuals from diverse backgrounds and providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed, VMware is helping to create a more inclusive and innovative future for everyone. As one judge noted, “The projects presented at CodeHouse were truly impressive, showcasing the incredible potential of open source technology and the talent of these young women. I left feeling inspired by the future of tech.”
