Veeam Backup & Replication v10: Recovery from Any Device to Any Platform.

Last week, I talked about a fascinating new feature in Veeam Backup and Replication v10, which allows you to import backup restore points for recovery purposes in the case of disaster. These restore points are located on an object storage repository initially backing a capacity tier extent of a scale-out backup repository. This feature is game-changing because it means that the cloud tier now becomes a mechanism for recovery from any device to almost any platform.

While traveling home in November, I tweeted about this new feature and received a challenge response from Anton Gostev. As a result, I was able to test the Mount Object Storage Repository enhancement and demonstrate how well Veeam’s Cloud Tier Intelligent Block Recovery technology handles the efficient streaming of object storage data for instant recovery.

I performed an instant VM recovery directly from an Amazon S3 object storage repository to my local ESXi server on my laptop. I recorded a video of the proof of concept, which can be viewed below:

Although the recovery process was a bit slow due to latency issues with the US-EAST-1 S3 bucket, I was still able to mount and boot the VM while flying at 900 km/h at 41,000 feet. This is an incredible example of how innovative Veeam’s Cloud Tier technology is and the smart features they have built under the hood that differentiate it from other implementations.

The key advantage of this feature is that there is no pre-staging of data required; Veeam knows which objects of data need to be streamed for recovery, making the process much faster and more efficient.
