Installing XBMC on an Ubuntu-based Media Centre PC – Part 2

In the previous installment of this article, we covered the hardware aspect of building a media centre PC using a Microserver and a variety of peripherals. In this second part, we will delve into the software installation process and explore how to set up XBMC on our Ubuntu-based Media Centre PC.

As mentioned earlier, I decided to go with XBMCbuntu, an all-in-one install with an Ubuntu Linux operating system and the XBMC software pre-installed. This made sense for my use case as I only needed this server for a single purpose. To begin the installation process, I used a USB memory stick to download the XBMCbuntu image and boot it on the Microserver.

Upon booting up the Microserver, the XBMC boot screen appeared, offering me the choice of trying or installing XBMC. Since my mind was already made up, I opted for the install option. The installation process was quite straightforward and involved a series of standard install screens asking for information on my language and location.

Once these screens were completed, the install process spent some time copying files and then prompted me to remove the USB stick and reboot. After the reboot, the XBMC system came up first time and was ready to use. In total, the installation process took about two hours from start to finish, including the time it took to copy the files.

This means that I can easily upgrade or modify the system as needed, without having to worry about compatibility issues. As a systems administrator, you understand the importance of regularly backing up your system configurations to avoid data loss in case of a storage server crash or reinstallation. However, currently, there is no built-in option to schedule a configuration backup using the DataCore GUI. This is where my PowerShell script comes into play.

My script uses Microsoft PowerShell, DataCore SANsymphony-V PowerShell cmdlets, and the Windows Task Scheduler to automate the backup of SANsymphony-V configuration. The script saves the last three versions of the configuration backups, but you can change this by modifying the $Keep variable. Additionally, you can specify a different directory than C:\Scripts for the backup location by modifying the $BackupFolder variable.

To use the script, simply call it using the Taskplanner with the following command:

powershell.exe -c “C:\Scripts\Backup-DataCoreConfig.ps1 | Out-Null”

The “Out-Null” behind the pipe symbol suppresses the output of the script. You can also schedule the script to run automatically at a specific time using the Windows Task Scheduler.

Reimagining IT Support

Building a Home Media Centre with XBMCbuntu – Part 1

In this blog post, I will be documenting my journey of building a home media centre using the HP Proliant Microserver and the XBMCbuntu operating system. The hardware for my media centre arrived from Ebuyer, consisting of the HP Proliant Microserver, replacement DIMMs to upgrade the RAM to 8GB, and a Sapphire Radeon HD5450 Graphics card.

The first step after unpacking the boxes was to open up the server and fit the graphics card and replace the memory. As I had not come across one of these Microservers before, I found the HP website an invaluable source of information on how to dismantle the case. The motherboard slides out easily once the front of the unit is opened and some cables are disconnected.

I removed the full-height backplane from the new graphics card and fitted the two half-height ones. One has DVI and HDMI, while the second has VGA. Although the VGA is optional, I decided to leave it in place as I don’t have anything else to fill the second slot on the motherboard. Next, I removed the 2GB DIMM and replaced it with two 4GB DIMMs. Although I’m not expecting this box to eat 8GB in its current role, it made sense to upgrade all the way now rather than needing more RAM later.

The next step was to slide the motherboard back into the case, making sure the backplanes of the graphics card went into the appropriate gap in the rear of the case. This was a little tricky with the free-floating VGA one, but with patience and the use of my little finger, I managed to get it into place. Finally, the door and lid of the case were put back on, and the unit was ready to power up and install the operating system.
