HotLink SuperVISOR: A Free Virtualization Tool for Managing Windows Hyper-V VMs

As a long-time user of HotLink SuperVISOR in my lab environment, I have come to appreciate the power and flexibility of this virtualization tool. Recently, HotLink announced the release of a free version of their SuperVISOR, which has me excited to share my experiences with this software and show you how to get started using it to manage your Windows Hyper-V VMs.

Previously, I had thought that using multi-hypervisors was a bad idea, but with HotLink SuperVISOR, I can see the potential cost savings of creating “tiered hypervisors” just like you might do with your storage. Additionally, I have used HotLink’s Hybrid Express to connect my vSphere virtual infrastructure to the public cloud and manage VMs running in public clouds just as I do my vSphere VMs.

The free version of HotLink SuperVISOR offers many of the same features as the paid version, including support for managing Windows Hyper-V VMs, vCenter integration, and hybrid cloud management. With this tool, you can easily manage your virtual infrastructure, move VMs between your on-premises environment and the public cloud, and take advantage of the scalability and cost savings that the cloud offers.

Automate Salt Minion Deployment with VMware Tools for Seamless Infrastructure Management

Deploying Salt Minions with VMware Tools 12.0.0

In the latest release of VMware Tools, version 12.0.0, VMware has added a new integration capability that supports the deployment of Salt Minions within virtual machines. This new feature makes it easier than ever to deploy new Salt Minions to both new and existing virtual machines. In this post, I will walk through the process of deploying a Salt Minion to an existing virtual machine using VMware Tools 12.0.0.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with the deployment of Salt Minions, there are two pieces of information that you need to have:

1. The FQDN or IP address of your Salt Master.

2. The ID you wish to assign to the Salt Minion.

In this walkthrough, I will be using a Microsoft Windows Server 2022 virtual machine labeled “MANAGEMENT” within the vCenter Server.

Step 1: Connect to vCenter Server

The first step is to connect to the vCenter Server using VMware PowerCLI. The following command can be used to connect to the vCenter Server:

Step 2: Define Variables

Next, we need to define variables that will store the virtual machine object, the FQDN of our Salt Master, and the ID we wish to assign to the new Salt Minion. The following commands can be used to define these variables:

$saltMasterFqdn = “saltstack.stevenbright.local”

$minionId = $vm.Name.ToLower()

Step 3: Add Advanced Attributes

Now that we have defined the variables, we can add the new advanced attributes to our virtual machine using the following command:

Step 4: Start Installation Process

VMware Tools periodically polls guest variables for state changes. During the next polling cycle, VMware Tools will see the newly created guest variables that we defined and will start the installation process for the Salt Minion. Unfortunately, this installation process does not generate log entries in the vCenter Server to notify us that it has started or finished. However, you can query the latest status of the Salt Minion by viewing the advanced attribute “guestinfo.vmware.components.salt_minion.laststatus”.

To accomplish this using VMware PowerCLI, we can execute the following command:

Step 5: Monitor Salt Minion Status

To monitor the status of the Salt Minion, we can query the advanced attribute “guestinfo.vmware.components.salt_minion.laststatus”. The following are the possible return values:

* 100: The Salt Minion is running and has been successfully installed.

* 0: The Salt Minion is not running or has failed to install.

Assuming everything has worked as expected, you should also now see a new Minion Key pending approval within the VMware vRealize Automation SaltStack Config web UI.

With this new integration, you can easily manage your Salt Minions within your vSphere environment.

VMworld 2018 Day 4 Recap

Day 4 of the VMworld conference was filled with even more exciting sessions and announcements. As we walked through the exhibit hall, we couldn’t help but feel at home with all the familiar faces and solutions on display. While I didn’t have as many sessions scheduled for today, I still managed to learn a lot and discover some innovative solutions.

One of the highlights of my day was attending the “Clustering Deep Dive” session by Duncan Epping and Frank Delenia. With adoption rates of over 90%, clustering is clearly a popular feature within the VMware ecosystem. As administrators, we have become accustomed to restarting hosts within a VM after a hypervisor crash, but it’s important to remember that this process should be tested and not taken lightly. Duncan emphasized the importance of thoroughly testing all configurations before deploying them in production, as some parameters can have disastrous consequences on the resilience of your infrastructure.

The session also delved into DeepDive’s analysis of logs within an ESXi cluster during incidents such as hardware failures. Proactive HA, which allows for the analysis of degradation in equipment health to anticipate failures and trigger preemptive migrations, was also discussed. While this technology has been around since 2006, it is still not widely deployed. Frank provided a detailed explanation of the various metrics used to assess the health of VMs, their neighbors, and their future state when considering a migration.

DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler) was another topic that was covered in depth. With its numerous configuration options, DRS can be optimized for placement within a cluster. The session highlighted the importance of CPU %ready, memory active vs. consumed, distribution of VMs, and network-aware DRS. Additionally, the settings VM distribution, which attempts to prioritize “VM Happiness,” has three primary use cases:

Finally, the Predictive DRS (associated with vROPS) was discussed, which allows for the prediction of behavior over the next 60 minutes and considers the current happiness state of a VM when deciding whether to migrate it.

In summary, day 4 of the VMworld conference was filled with valuable insights and innovative solutions within the VMware ecosystem. From clustering to DRS and predictive analytics, there is always something new to learn for administrators looking to optimize their virtualized infrastructure.
