Veeam Powered Network (VPN) Update: Enhanced Security and Simplified Management
As part of our commitment to providing the best possible experience for our users, we have recently released a minor update to Veeam Powered Network (VPN), taking the version to 2.1 (Build 2.1.0.461). This release brings some under-the-hood enhancements and adds support for VPN deployment from the AWS Marketplace. In this blog post, we will delve into the key features and improvements of this update and how it benefits our users.
OpenVPN Replaced with WireGuard
In our previous release (version 2.0), we made a significant change by replacing OpenVPN with WireGuard for site-to-site networking functionality. This move was driven by the need for increased security and simplicity in managing VPN connections. With WireGuard, we have achieved both these objectives, as it provides better encryption and is easier to set up and maintain compared to OpenVPN.
Under-the-Hood Enhancements
Version 2.1 includes some minor under-the-hood enhancements that improve the overall performance and stability of Veeam PN. These enhancements include improved handling of DNS suffixes and servers, which enables better resolution of FQDNs in connected sites. Additionally, we have made several bug fixes and optimizations to ensure a smoother user experience.
Deployment from AWS Marketplace
One of the most significant additions in version 2.1 is support for VPN deployment from the AWS Marketplace. This feature allows users to easily deploy and manage their Veeam PN instances on the AWS cloud, providing greater flexibility and scalability. With this addition, our users can now leverage the power of AWS to simplify their VPN management and ensure secure connectivity across their networks.
Upgrade Process and Considerations
For those still running version 1.0, there is no direct upgrade to 2.x due to the replacement of OpenVPN with WireGuard. Instead, users will need to first upgrade to version 2.0, and then proceed with the update to version 2.1. The upgrade process is straightforward, and users can complete it in under a minute. To initiate the upgrade, simply click on the “Settings” tab, then select “Updates” and click the “Update Now” button. Note that there will be a brief service restart during the upgrade process, and all existing connections will be disconnected. After about a minute, users can log back in, and all endpoints should automatically reconnect.
Command Line Upgrade
For power users who prefer to use the command line for upgrades, Veeam PN also supports an apt-get based upgrade process. To initiate the upgrade using the command line, users can run the following command:
“`
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -f
“`
This command will check for any available updates and install them if found. Then it will perform a complete installation of all packages, ensuring that all dependencies are met.
DNS Suffixes and Servers Management
In the Veeam PN hub portal, users can now view the list of configured sites, DNS suffixes, and DNS servers. This feature enables easier management of DNS settings and allows users to toggle the DNS setting to off if desired. Additionally, users can configure DNS forwarding and resolve FQDNs in connected sites using the DNS configuration menu.
Conclusion
The latest update to Veeam Powered Network (VPN) version 2.1 brings several enhancements and improvements over its predecessor. With the replacement of OpenVPN with WireGuard, users can now enjoy better security and simplified management of their VPN connections. Additionally, support for deployment from the AWS Marketplace provides greater flexibility and scalability for our users. We encourage all our users to upgrade to version 2.1 to take advantage of these exciting new features and improvements.
