REFLECTIONS ON THE FUTURE OF IT: LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING FORWARD

As we enter the second month of 2020, it’s hard to believe that another year has passed and we are already in a new decade. As I reflect on the past year and look forward to the future, I am reminded of how quickly time seems to pass as we get older and how much the world has changed since I was a kid.

When I think about the past year, I am struck by how much has happened in the IT industry. From advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning to the rise of cloud computing and edge computing, it seems like there is no shortage of exciting developments on the horizon.

As I look forward to the next ten years, I am filled with a sense of wonder and excitement about what the future holds. I remember watching Beyond 2000 as a kid and dreaming about a world where flying cars and robots were a reality. While we may not have achieved those specific goals yet, we are certainly on our way to creating a world that is more technologically advanced and interconnected than ever before.

One of the areas I am most excited about is automation and infrastructure as code. As IT practitioners, it is essential that we learn how to be more efficient in our day-to-day roles and master automation to better control data. Data is the new uranium, not oil, and it has a half-life that can be repeatedly tapped into. This decade will see the activation of data get more and more advanced, and the organizations that can harness that will be best placed to succeed.

Another area I am excited about is the infinite game. Simon Sinek’s latest book opened my eyes to what it truly means to succeed and the importance of having direction. It made me think about what I want to be a part of moving forward into this new decade, not just for short-term wins but for the long game.

As we look forward to the next ten years, it is essential that we remain up to date with current technology trends and industry moves and how data flows as the lifeblood of the whole world. It’s also crucial that we think about the longer game and what it means to be part of a team in terms of career progression and self-satisfaction.

In conclusion, we live in amazing times, and we also work in an amazing industry. As we enter this new decade, I am filled with excitement about what the future holds and the incredible possibilities that lie ahead. Hold on people! We are in for a ride this decade!
