DHL Introduces New Parcel Class for Heavy Packages

DHL changes its pricing policy for packages due to new postal law

In response to the recently revised Post Act, DHL has announced changes to its pricing policy for packages. According to the new law, packages weighing between 10 and 20 kilograms will be subject to a lower price category (18.99 euros for domestic shipping), while packages weighing between 20 and 31.5 kilograms will be placed in a higher price category (23.99 euros). This change is intended to protect delivery personnel from potential back injuries caused by lifting heavy packages.

Previously, DHL had a single price category for all packages, regardless of their weight. However, with the new law, packages must now be labeled according to their weight class. Packages weighing over 20 kilograms will be subject to different delivery standards, and may require two people to deliver them. The exact technical specifications for these deliveries will be determined by the Federal Ministry of Labor by the end of the year.

In addition to changes in pricing policy, DHL will also be adjusting its service times for brief products. Beginning in 2025, 95% of brief sendings must arrive within three days of being deposited, compared to the previous two-day limit. Additionally, customers will have the option to choose a shorter delivery time for an additional fee. The cost of sending briefs will also increase, and the number of post offices in Germany must be at least 12,000, with a minimum of 12,000 universally accessible post offices.

The German Post promises to ensure that all communities are adequately supplied with postal services, and that the new law will not lead to a decrease in the number of post offices. The changes aim to protect delivery personnel while also ensuring the continued availability of reliable and efficient postal services for customers.
