My Journey to Becoming a vSphere 7.x Certified Professional

Preparing for the VMware VCP-DCV Exam: A Personal Journey

As an operations engineer transitioning to a consultant, I knew that obtaining certifications would be essential in showcasing my skills and knowledge in the industry. After discussing with Christian Mohn, we decided that starting with the VMware VCP-DCV for vSphere 7.x would be an excellent place to begin. This certification validates candidates’ skills in implementing, managing, and troubleshooting a vSphere infrastructure, providing a powerful and flexible foundation for business agility.

I started my preparation with the VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage [V7] course, which I found to be an excellent resource despite having worked with multiple VMware products for years. The course provided a comprehensive overview of the vSphere infrastructure and its various components. Additionally, I was grateful that my colleagues recommended setting the speed of the course to 2X, allowing me to complete it more quickly.

After completing the course, I delved into studying for the VCP exam. The exam consists of 70 questions, a mix of single and multiple choice answers, and lasts 130 minutes. To pass the exam, you need to score at least 300 points. My first attempt at the exam did not go as planned, as I failed despite feeling confident in my knowledge of VMware products.

Upon reviewing my performance, I realized that the exam is structured to test your proficiency in a wide range of VMware technologies, so it’s essential to study thoroughly and prepare for questions on topics you may not be familiar with. To improve my chances of passing, I started using study guides, including the VCP-DCV for vSphere 7.x (Exam 2V0-21.20) Official Cert Guide. This guide proved to be an invaluable resource, providing detailed explanations and practice questions that helped me fill in the gaps in my knowledge.

Another crucial resource I discovered was the Pearson practice exams, which I accessed through the eBook I purchased on Amazon. The premium edition of the book provided links to the practice tests on the Pearson site: pearsontestprep.com. These practice exams were incredibly helpful, as they allowed me to assess my knowledge and identify areas that required more study.

As the day of my retake approached, I made sure to prepare everything in advance. I took multiple pre-exam tests of my equipment to ensure that everything was working properly, and I tidied up my workspace to minimize distractions during the exam. Additionally, I took pictures of my workspace from several angles to prove that I had not accessed any unauthorized materials during the exam.

When the day of the exam arrived, I felt confident and well-prepared. The exam itself was challenging, but I found that the practice exams had prepared me well for the format and difficulty level. I answered each question to the best of my ability, using the knowledge I had gained from studying and the practice exams.

Upon submitting my answers, I was relieved and elated to see that I had passed the exam! To celebrate, I received a physical pin at VMware Explore, which served as a tangible reminder of my achievement.

In conclusion, preparing for the VMware VCP-DCV exam was an challenging but rewarding experience. I highly recommend using the Pearson prep guide and practice exams to help you prepare, as they were invaluable resources for me. Additionally, make sure to take multiple pre-exam tests of your equipment and tidy up your workspace before the exam to minimize distractions and ensure a smooth experience. With dedication and persistence, you can pass the exam and achieve this valuable certification.
